A lovely, brightly coloured alphabet and picture sampler with three different styles of alphabets, a cheerful poem, which has not been spaced well (so this is probably not a school sampler). The verse reads:-

Lord, it's a pleasant thing to stand

In gardens planted by thy hand

Let me within thy courts be seen

Like a young cedar fresh and green

It is signed H Hirst and dated 1844.  There is a splendid woodpecker and ornamental blue bird and robin worked with shrubs, a basket and some urns of flowers.

Condition is mostly good and sturdy but there is a bit of damage near the edges and a hole at the top edge, and some wear to the stitches.  There are also some rust type and grubby marks.

Ecru canvas worked in black, green, brown, red, blue, purple, lilac and pink threads.

c1844.

Measures approx. 31cm x 35cm (12 1/4" x 13 3/4").
