A hand embroidered net bonnet / coif with some beautiful work with satin-stitch formations in the 'plumetis' Flemish style. Two large heart-shaped motifs are outlined with a row of eyelets and decorated with sprays of foliage and daisy like flowers. There is a lot of work in this piece, and the net has been edged with a black silk ribbon decorated with cream stitching at the edges. It is difficult to know whether it was made as a cap for a baby or as a coif for a lady.
Condition is very good apart from a group of holes in an unadorned section of the net.
19th century.
The lace is cream in colour with some age marks - this piece has been part of a private collection for many years and has not been cleaned recently.
Measures approx. 40cm (15 3/4") over the head and 28cm (11") along the back of the neck, including the black ribbon trim.
Price - £85.00
